Sunday the 8th October saw the running of Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Club’s, Callala Bay and Culburra 1st National Real Estate Spring Series, Round the Bay Race. The race saw a fleet of seven yachts entered, with three of the larger yachts in Division 1 completing a 17-nautical mile course that circumnavigated Jervis Bay, the four smaller vessels in Division 2 tackled a slightly shorter course of 15- nautical miles. The winds were variable, but mostly from the North East at 15 knots. The racing was close in both divisions, with Matana and Fricka fighting a tacking duel, through the final leg, right up to the finish line. In a tight race for handicap honours Matana, Fricka and Wotalife all finished within five minutes of each other. The racers were also joined by a pod of frolicking whales, reminding everyone of just what a special cruising ground the Jervis Bay Marine Park is. Line honours in Division 1 was taken by Alan Leach (Tranquillity) in 2 hours 46 minutes, also winning the division on handicap. The second place, on handicap, went to Brian Horley (Wine Down) and Shane Firkin (Quintessence) came in third. In Division 2 Trevor Smith (Relentless) claimed line honours in 3 hours 19 minutes. After handicapping the results in Division 2 were, 1st Denis Meredith (Wotalife), 2nd Trevor Smith (Relentless) and Third Paul Gooey (Matana). |
