The point-score series, sponsored by the Parkhaven Motor Lodge, got underway on Sunday 25th.  The wind forecast was for a promising 10 – 15 knots (west tending south), increasing to 20 knots as the race progressed.  The forecasters were spot on, making for a quick and exciting race.

At the start “Tranquility”, “Friendship”, “Invincible” and “Matana” got away well. “Tranquility” (Div.3) took the lead and held it to round S1 first.  Friendship was first in Div.1 while “Matana” took the honours in Div. 2.

The first leg towards Long Beach was a single tack work.  “Friendship” and “Sojourn 3” managed to edge pass “Tranquility” which put Friendship (the newly refurbished Navy boat) in front for the next leg – a long tight reach across the bay towards Huskison.  In Div.2 “Matana” was holding her lead ahead of “Laser 3”, “Relentless” and “Wotalife”.

About halfway across the bay “Sojourn 3” took the outright lead from “Friendship” while “Tranquility” was holding a comfortable 3rd.  At this stage of the race there were gusts approaching 20 knots making it heavy going for the smaller trailables – “Why Knot” and “Laser 3”.  However, they both did well and held their places.  “Matana” also handled the conditions well, to stay in front in Div.2.

The leg back across the bay towards the finish was probably the most fun. Being a beam reach most boats achieved their best speeds in the race. By this stage the fleet had settled into positions that remained the same until the finish.

Over the line it was “Sojourn 3” in Div.1, “Matana” in Div.2 and “Tranquility” in Div. 3. On handicap the bottles of wine went to “Sojourn 3” and “Invincible” (Div.1), “Matana” and “Wotalife” (Div. 2), and “Tranqulity” (Div. 3).

Next race will be held on October 9.  It’s the first round the bay (RTB) race for the Spring series and all club members are encouraged to participate.
