Sunday 10th December saw the running of the 1st round in the Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Clubs, Tahmoor Rural Summer Series.

On a fine day, with gusty 10 to 15 knot winds from the North East, a fleet of 8 yachts made the 11am race start. Six yachts, including 3 catamarans started in Division 1 tackling a 12.7 knot course. Two smaller Division 2 yachts took on a slightly shorter, 10.7 knot, course.

Allan Leach’s catamaran, Tranquillity, got off to a great start leading the field past the first windward mark. The fleet then headed, downwind, south down Jervis Bay.

The race in Division 1 saw a duel between the Navy’s Friendship and Trevor Kannar’s Invincible. With Friendship having problems with their spinnaker during a downwind leg Invincible stayed ahead for most of the race. In the final leg, sailing into the wind, Friendship was able to sail slightly closer to the wind and passed Invincible crossing the line 1st. Invincible would eventually win on handicap.

The two yachts in Division 2 continued their intense rivalry from the previous Spring Race Series. Paul Gooey’s lighter yacht, Matana, started stronger and led through the race. With both yachts flying spinnakers downwind Denis Meredith’s Wotalife was able to gain and finished close enough behind Matana to win on handicap.

At the end of the race with the winds gusting over 20 knots, Allan Leach (Tranquillity) took line honours on 2 hours 14 minutes.

After handicapping in Division 1 Trevor Kannar (Invincible) was 1st, Allan Leach in (Tranquillity) 2nd and Brian Horley in (Wine Down) 3rd.

In Division 2 Paul Gooey in (Matana) crossed the line 1st in 2 hours 47 minutes. Dennis Meredith (Wotalife) came 1st on handicap with Paul Gooey moving into 2nd place.

With the first race of the Summer Series down The Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Club’s next race is Saturday 16th December. Next Saturdays race is a special fun Christmas event and not part of the Summer Series. It will be followed by the clubs Christmas party.
