Strong winds cause damage to fleet in RTB race 1

posted Oct 6, 2008, 1:02 PM by Tony Byrnes
The first of the Round the Bay series saw the fleet tested by strong winds. At one stage of the race, yachts were experiencing 40 plus knots of wind. Out of a fleet of 20 yachts, only 8 completed the course.
First casuality was Isis which was grounded on Callala Beach. Next was Sapphire Dancer which broke its mast. Several other minor breakages were experienced on other yachts.
Full credit to the seamanship of all skippers and crew during the event, as nobody was injured, and all situations were dealt with very well.
One of the best achievements of the day, was to see Steve McDonald and his crew, complete the course and finish, on his 24 ft yacht Sundowner.
