Spring Series Race 5 - Only for the brave of heart

posted Nov 18, 2014, 5:28 PM by David Churchward

Only the keenest of keen racers fronted for the final race of the Spring Series sponsored by John & Jenny Lawrence from Parkhaven Motor Lodge in Nowra. The Bureau of Meteorology promised strong to Gale force winds and they did not disappoint with upward of a gusty 38 kts. Those eager to feature as a Series winner in the close point score were in for a hard day on the Jervis Bay.

A single start for all 3 divisions saw 8 keen sailing crews head to the windward mark S1, with all boats having at least 1 reef in their sails if not 2. Safety was paramount and a desire to avoid gear breakage was high on the agenda.

Division 1’s Peter O’Reiley’s Fuzzy Logic made a good start and cleared out being first to the windward mark and led the way for approximately 2/3’s of the race before equipment failure caused him to reluctantly retire. Line honours for Division 1 went to Tony Byrne’s Mohawk but on Performance Handicap the day belonged to the well sailed Navy boat Friendship skippered by ”Blue” Timms, with 2nd place to  Invincible, 3rd to Manly Too, and fourth Mohawk.

The lone starter in Division 2 was Matana skippered by Paul Gooey. The weather was well outside their comfort zone in the smaller boat but they battled on to complete the shortened course in very trying conditions.

Division 3 multi hulls were contested by the two competitive Seawinds with Alan & Kerry Leach’s Tranquility and Kevin & Joanne Lord’s Overture. First to the windward S1 mark was Overture who again had a close match all the way. Line honours once again went to Tranquility but on handicap it was Overture who won the day.

It was a credit to all skippers and crew who braved the conditions for sailing under very trying conditions, well done

The Parkhaven Lodge Spring Series Division one winners 1st Friendship, 2nd Manly Too & 3rd Invincible. Division two winners were 1st Matana, 2nd Motion & 3rd Rockhopper. Division three winners were 1st Overture (on count back), 2nd Tranquility & 3rd Sas Sea.
