Second Race of the JBCYC Autumn Series – Challenging in Overcast Conditions

posted Apr 15, 2016, 1:34 AM by David Churchward

Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Club Race 2 of the Autumn series sponsored by Callala Cellars started in cool overcast conditions with only 8 to 9 knots of wind. Getting away to a good start was Sojourn III skippered by Rick Early in Divison 1 while Laser 3 skippered by John Anderson, and Tranquility skippered by Al Leach, both enjoyed a good start in their respective divisions.

The course took the boats from Callala Bay, south to Honeymoon Bay, across the bay to Callala Beach, and then back to Hare Bay for a final few short legs. A southerly swell made for choppy conditions and the wind seemed to come and go, the yachts soon became quite spread out over the course as some handled the conditions better than others.

In Division one the Navy yacht Friendship skippered by Wayne Prior put up a good fight but Sojourn III was too good on the day. Y-knot skippered by Stephen Lee came close to overtaking Friendship on the last leg, but had to settle for third place across the line. On handicap results it was Sojourn III in first place, Y-knot second, and Friendship third.

In Division 2 Motion skippered by David Churchward crossed the line first. However John Anderson in Laser 3 won the day on handicap, with Paul Gooey in Matana coming second, and Motion coming in third.

Division 3 which is the multihull division saw three Seawind 1000’s finishing on the podium. Al Leach lead all the way but on performance handicap Extasea skippered by Jim Lay took out first place with Al Leach’s Tranuility coming second while John Lawrence’s SasSea coming in third.
