Big Cats Revel in Windy Conditions

By Fran Clements

After the champagne conditions of the previous race it was a different story for Jervis Bay cruising Yacht Club on Sunday April 11, with strong gusty westerly winds presenting a lively challenge for some 18 entrants in Race 3 of the Autumn Series.

The feisty westerly began to blow early resulting in the fleet making a flying start under full sail. Winds strengthened during the day living up to the forecast 20-30 knots, often gusting to 35 and producing testing conditions.

Despite reducing sail, skippers and crew still had to grapple with the effects of the repeated sudden gusts as they made their way around the course, from Hare Bay down the eastern side of Jervis Bay, west across to Huskisson and then north back up to Callala Bay.

Denis Godfrey's trimarman Wahoo spend a bit of  action time up on one hull and Allan Leach's Tranquillity lost ground while having to remedy a broken reefing line. Several boats retired due to the trying conditions.

Over the course the catamarans came into their own however with Brian Saunders' Sea Change followed closely by John and Jenny Lawrence's Sas Sea and Tranquillity all storming to the fore to lead home Division 2 and the entire fleet.

A well earned BBQ and quiet beverage were enjoyed by all after the race. Congratulations to the winners and well done to everyone who took to the water.

Next races: April 24 Short Offshore Race 3 (rescheduled after earlier weather postponement). May 2 Autumn Series race 4.
