Skippers and crews hone their skills on Jervis Bay. The simultaneous race start off Callala Bay for all three divisions in Race 1 of Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Club’s Spring Series last weekend provided impetus for skippers and crews of the 15 yachts participating, to hone their skills early in the season. The competitive spirit within Division 1 was evident throughout the race. Rick and Collette Early’s Beneteau Vision 44 Sojourn III did not tarry around the course, showing her strength early as the wind freshened, choosing not to fly her kite. On the Eureka 34 Fuzzy Logic, Peter O”Reilly navigated the course fluently, with skipper Richard (Bluey) Timms, and gallant crew on Navy’s Swarbrick S111 Friendship, never far away. However, with prowess Commodore Mark Tobin’s Farr 11.6 Cougar recovered from a headsail change undertaken precariously close to a reef off Callala Bay, and gracefully ran for the finish retrieving Line Honours and an impressive performance handicap win in Division 1 from all rivals. In Division 2, on David and Pauline Churchward’s Bounty 35 Motion, Pauline held the helm and she sailed determinedly. On their Hutton 28 Matana, Paul and Joan Gooey made good use of the heightening winds in the later stages to narrow the gap. Not to be deterred, Kenny Dryburgh on his Northshore 27 Rock Hopper, romped home minutes ahead of closest rivals, streaking across the line as Line Honours winner in Division 2. However, with success in her sails Bill and Carmel Dicker’s Northshore 27 Leeuwin, proved herself a force to be reckoned with blowing across the line as performance handicap winner in Division 2. Prior to race start in Division 3, on one of the Seawind Catamarans, Kevin and Joanne Lord’s Overture, Joanne was hoisted up the mast stealthily retrieving Overture’s mainsail halyard, which had caught and locked on the spreaders in the blustery breeze! Tension ran high from race start between all contenders with Brian Saunders’ Sea Change 2 and Allan & Kerry Leach’s Tranquility 4 challenging Overture throughout the course. The catamarans, revelling in the stronger wind, were forced up behind each other, tacking and jibbing in close proximity for most of the race. Undeterred, the Lords of the Overture, with crew highly tuned, played a race to win a well noted Line Honours and First Place PHS in Division 3. Our start boat Pandora, was ably manned on the day by Ron and Eileen Young. The JBCYC committee thank them for their continued support; also Lisa Hood and Kerry Leach for ensuring the BBQ is sizzling with burgers or sausages at our post-race de-brief and presentations; and Jervis Bay Yachting for its unerring patronage of our Spring Series. Race 2 of our Spring Series on 7th October is set to be a proving ground for all contenders! Also coming up on Saturday 10th November is the Jervis Bay Challenge with post-race social event, run in collaboration with Jervis Bay Sailing Club. The Club would like to encourage new members and people interested in crewing to view the clubs website at www.jbcyc.com.au for information about the club’s sailing and social calendar for the season ahead and for contact details of the club’s officers. Visitors are welcome to introduce themselves to members of the race committee prior to race briefings, details of which can be also be viewed on our website.
