A race review as experienced from on board Overture.
Last Sunday saw the fleet contest the first round of the 2013/14 Summer Series Sponsored by Parkhaven Motor Inn. The club would like to thank to John and Jenny Lawrence for coming back to Callala to present the days trophies at the completion of the race. The light winds forecast required early course adjustments to be made in case of the need for shortened course but this didn't eventuate and the fleet enjoyed a beautiful 5 to 15 knot SE to NE wind all afternoon . With good starts from Mohawk, Motion and Tranquility, each taking out the first to S1 prize for their division, the Fleet was away for an around the bay course. Ten minutes in to the race I asked my crew is there anyone behind us ,the reply was 'no'. The big black sails in the distance were hard to make out. Cougar and Mohawk looked like they were match racing as they moved away from the fleet both sporting experienced and well trained crew.
A call was heard on channel 77 "Sojourn you are heading for a reef ", but no they were just about to tack.
Tranquility was in their own duel with Overture and decided to tack away heading toward the Hobie fleet who were contesting a state title.Next minute a Hobie from out of no where was sticking out of the Starboard side of Seawind.... bugger.
Ken and Wendy on Rockhopper were having their own battle with Motion and Matana hot on their tails.
The fleet headed for Hole in the Wall, then to Longnose for a run home. The run home was enjoyed by the lead boats Cougar and Mohawk who were able to carry Spinnakers to the finish line. Fuzzy Logic followed but too late, the wind was swinging to the NE and too shy for a kite, another Bugger.
Overture enjoyed the now reaching conditions and got out of there and looking back everyone else struggled from H2 to H1 with the shifting wind.
Div 1 line honours went to Cougar with Mohawk then Sojourn. It was good to see the different Divisions sailing together at different stages on the course.
Another great day sailing on JB
