Ready to Race!

Despite the coastal swell on Sunday 19 it was a great day for sailing on Jervis Bay and the JBCYC Season Opener warm-up race.

While some took advantage of the event being a non-scoring one to have an extra week off, a good fleet of 13 hit the water for some competitive fun. The new club start boat ‘Pandora’ put on a good show on her first outing and the improved flag arrangement was much clearer for boats to see as they maneuvered at the start.

The fleet headed off from Hare Bay at 11am in a light south easterly that then shifted around to the north east as boats began the work back up into the bay from the windward mark. Once around at the top of the course quite a few boats broke out the colourful kites for a brisk run down to a temporary mark set off Callala Beach. A resting seal on the southern end of that leg seemed quite unconcerned about the passing traffic as it lolled about enjoying a ‘sail’ of its  own.

The wind strengthened as the fleet packed the spinnakers away and worked back across and up the bay. The warm blue sunny skies were gradually replaced with cool overcast and slightly choppy conditions. After making the northern marks again the fleet made a return run to Callala Beach followed by another work up the middle before heading for the finish line off Callala Bay.

The BBQ also got a  workout back at the clubhouse and everyone enjoyed a catch-up while waiting for the presentations. The race may have been a warm-up but there were still accolades for the winners! Congratulations to all who took part.

We look forward to seeing everyone next Sunday 26 for Race 1 of the Revolution Sails Spring Series. Briefing at Callala Bay 9.30am. Check website for race details the night before.
