Race 3 Spring Series

posted Nov 1, 2011, 7:09 PM by Mark Tobin

Race 3 of the Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Club Paper Bark Camp sponsored Spring Series started in very light Easterly breezes with boats surrounded by dolphins.  The pin end of the line was favoured with a port tack being the making leg which saw Sundowner (Steve MacDonald), Rock Hopper(Ken Dryburgh), Aqua Gem (Jim Lay)and Tranquility(Alan Leach) off to an early break in Divisions 2 and 3.  Division 1 followed with a competitive start amongst the lead boats with Cougar (Mark Tobin) Chutzpah (Adrian Mills) all breasting the line on starboard tack.  The second row had Arabesque (Tony Byrnes) and Eve’s Delight (Jeremy Hutchins) tacking away quickly for clear air.  With the pressure holding in the middle of the bay and patchy conditions to the east most boats continued on a port tack heading South with Arabesque one of the boats tacking back early to take advantage of the forecast north easterly.   Slowing in the soft conditions the boats still heading south appeared to pull away until the change came through with fresh breezes and a forty to fifty degree swing in the wind direction giving the boats to the east a fast run to the first turning mark with Arabesque taking the lead in Division 1.  At the A3 mark Sundowner was first around in Division 2 with Tranquility and Overture (Kevin Lord) close behind.  With all boats on the leg back to the west there was a sea of spinnakers on the way down to Huskisson with Arabesque and Chutzpah duelling all the way.  Aqua Gem flying a new yellow spinnaker flew down the run and made time on the Division 2 leaders.  On the work back to the A2 mark west of Green Point, Catapult (David Braidwood) was pushing its larger Seawind competitors in Division 3 while Motion(David Churchwood) and Aqua Gem were trying to run down Sundowner in Div 2.  Division 1 saw a fight to the finish between Arabesque and Chutzpah with Chutzpah, having squeezed past just before the last mark, holding them off under kite on the run to the finish line.   Thanks go to the 2 ex Commodores Peter Dallaway and Peter Cowman for running the start boat on the day, a job well done.  After a great day on the water, the results were:
