Autumn Series Race 4

Last Sunday saw the penultimate race of the season for the JBCYC and race 4 of the Autumn series sponsored by Coastal Palms Holiday Park with 14 yachts on the start line eager to get underway. With a brisk 17 knot SW wind predicted all day the boats had a clean start and were under way with the Cats Tranquillity & Overture leading the fleet but the division 1 big guns of Mohawk, Manly Too and Friendship gaining on them and overtaking while rounding S1. It was good to see Las Brisas joining the sailing fun and soon the fleet were all spread out heading towards Long Beach before turning to the Huskisson mark.

The monos were heeling over as they crossed the Bay slicing their way through the large swell. The wind picked up to 20 knots at times and then died again once they reached C1. Manly Too had a battle with Mohawk and Friendship around the first few buoys, as did Tranquillity & Overture. Heading towards D3 at Vincentia the wind dropped again and skippers gambled on what they thought was the best tact to take.

Most of the boats hoisted their colourful spinnakers trying to get the most of the lighter breeze as they made their way back across the Bay to the Redrock mark, the fleet well and truly spread out at this stage. Manly Too took out line honours as well as handicap honours with Mohawk second followed by Brazen, Friendship & Invincible.

The Division 2 boats of Motion, Matana, Rockhopper & Rippler had a shorter course to navigate and on handicap finished in this order.

The Multihull division 3 was taken out once again by Tranquillity who crossed first and took out the race on handicap, followed by Born to Tri, Sea Change, Overture and Las Brisas.

The last race of the season is on Saturday May 18th. Remember if you have a trophy from last season, please return it on this day or beforehand to Ken Dryburgh or Shane Firkin. The presentation night is on Saturday June 8th at Callala  RSL Club. Tickets are available $50 each and must be purchased prior to that night. Contact Shane Firkin.
