Never a Dull Moment

Overcast skies and consistent fresh winds were the order of the day for Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Club boats that took part in the 4th race of the Vincentia Newsagency Summer Series and 9th race of the Club Championship.

A late start was required as the Huskisson based yachts had to wait for a late high tide to get out of Currumbene Creek. Division 2 got away without any hiccups but it was all excitement for the Division 1 yachts as they all hit the starting line at the same time from various directions. Amazingly, no incidents took place, except a bit of vocalisation. Five boats, Splinter, Cougar, Dalliance, Jouissance and Arabesque all arrived at the first mark together and again there was some excited verbal exchanges.

Steve Simpson's Dalliance was the boat to shine in Division One holding 3rd place easily for the most part of the race. However, typical of sailing, and to coin the phrase used by one of our past club members to name his yacht, it was "never a dull moment". Just before the final buoy rounding, Dalliance broke her headsail halyard and had to reset it with the aid of her spinnaker halyard, only to discover once the sail was up again that it had a large tear in the top. Down with that sail and up with the much smaller replacement, by which time, her main rival, Arabesque had passed her and was headed for the finish line! The excitement continued with Jouissance giving Dalliance a great run to the finish. Each using the wind driven waves to surge in front of the other with their headsails poled out. Dalliance came out victorious but only by seconds.

In Division 2 Kevin Lord in Leeuwin, gave Kenny of Rockhopper a run for his money in their Northshore 27's until Kevin overshot a mark and lost ground. Sea Change and Tranquility dominated the results with Al Leach making a valiant but ineffective effort to defeat Sea Change.

The final results are as follows:

Div. 1

RHS  1.Cougar
        2.Jouissance
        3. Arabesque
PHS  1.Cougar
        2.Wahoo
        3.Dalliance

Div. 2

RHS  1.Sea Change
        2.Tranquility
        3. Leeuwin
PHS  1.Sea Change
        2.Tranquility
