Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Club members have been saddened to hear of the sudden death of respected local sailor Hubert Notter, 66, who died of a heart attack while trying to free his stranded vessel TECO on the beach at Trial Bay, South West Rocks, last Monday 16 August, 2010.

En route from Port Macquarie to Nambucca in the early stages of a voyage to Queensland Hubert stopped over at Trial Bay on Saturday 14 to shelter from stormy weather. During the night his 7.3m yacht dragged anchor and beached with the keel becoming embedded a metre deep in sand.

An attempt was made to refloat the yacht on Monday afternoon, with the assistance of a local fishing charter boat, however Hubert suffered a heart attack and collapsed into the water after shoveling sand from underneath the yacht.

An urgent request was made to Marine Rescue Trial Bay at 1.40pm to call for an ambulance but despite every effort Hubert could not be revived.

Hubert Notter had been a member of the Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Club since the late 1980’s and was a regular competitor in club events, routinely making the two hour trip from his property in Crookwell to take part in fortnightly races. He was generous with his knowledge and time and often took novice crew on board, sharing his experience, and was also heavily involved in maintenance of the club boat.

Originally self-taught to sail as a youth in his native Switzerland Hubert became an accomplished and intrepid sailor, frequently cruising single-handed up and down the coast.

In preparation for his current voyage Hubert spent a number of weeks planning various aspects of the trip and preparing his vessel TECO, an Endeavour 24, before setting out from Forster-Tuncurry for the 3-4 month cruise that was to have extended along the northern NSW and Queensland coasts.
After working as a builder in the Crookwell area for a number of years Hubert was intending to retire to Callala Bay later this year with his partner Flo.

A Funeral service for Hubert Notter will be held at Worrigee on Friday 3 September, at 1pm.
