"HMAS Creswell Hosts Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Club weekend of racing culminating in the Ladies Race Event"

by Meryl Simpson

Competitive tension was thick in the air as nine women jostled one another to be first to sign up to compete for the honour of having their name enscribed for posterity on the JBCYC Ladies Race trophy. They knew that Karen of Cougar was going to be difficult to beat as she had won the last 2 years running. But hopes were high and crews were pumped with the adrenaline required to support their skippers in completing fast tacks.

As the start time neared, all yachts headed for the line. Shouts of starboard rang out as Karen of Cougar attempted to cross the path of Meryl from Dalliance. However she tacked Cougar cleanly and managed to cross the line leaving Dalliance in her dirty air.

The other girls got off to clean starts at the other, more advantageous, end of the line and so cut down on the distance they needed to travel to the first rounding mark. Remarkably, however, in such light breeze, Meryl and her able crew were able to point Dalliance up well and were not out of  contention.

Mel on Arabesque and Karen on Cougar rounded the first the mark virtually together and a close duel ensued between them. On the run down to Huskisson many different paths were tried with some choosing the more direct route, hugging the shore to the finish line, but risking becalment while others stuck to the middle of the bay to seek out any wind lifts that they could run down on.

This leg was where the front runners were "run down like dogs" and the gap between boats vastly reduced. Helmswomen like Sal off Taste n Try, Wendy off Rockhopper and Kerry off Tranquility really showed their steely competitive resolve. Eventually, line honours went to a delighted Mel on Arabesque however, there can only be one true winner and this year, on handicap, Wendy of Rockhopper captured victory and takes home the coveted trophy!

Thanks, once again, must go to the crew of hard working naval personel and friends who hosted our club to a truly wonderful weekend of sailing and socialising at the HMAS Creswell base.
