Creswell Cup retained by Navy

posted Apr 20, 2015, 5:07 AM by David Churchward

A major highlight of our racing calendar is the Creswell Cup. It was held last Saturday 18th April under superb sailing conditions with the wind being a consistent 15 knot northerly with an occasional swing to the NNW.

The event was the outcome of a long planning process that commenced last July when our Commodore and Secretary met with the CO of Creswell, Captain Stephen Hussey, to discuss options for the format of the race and presentation. Since then both Navy personnel and JBCYC personnel have worked co-operatively to make it a successful event. Last Saturday's race was testimony to the success of that planning process and we were delighted to have such a significant Navy presence at both the race and the post race function. The start sequence was called by Captain Stephen Hussey aboard the Navy vessel Albacore which acted as the Committee Boat for the start. The Cup was successfully defended by the Navy and it was accepted by Commander Adrian Capper who attended the presentation on behalf of Creswell CO, Captain Stephen Hussey.

As for the racing itself: all boats were allocated to either the Navy Team or the JBCYC Team in matched pairs according to their handicap rating. This match racing resulted in allegiances being tested with some JBCYC yachts representing the Navy and a number of Navy personnel sailing with JBCYC.

Racing commenced at noon. The course from Creswell tracked to Long Nose Point, north to Honeymoon Bay then across to Myola Beach, back across the Bay to Long Beach, then north to the finish line at Callala Bay. Winds throughout the day were generally from the north tending westerly at times so sailing into the wind was the order of the day. Tactics became apparent as yachts tacked their way through the race. Great camaraderie was evident across the fleet and a superb day of sailing was enjoyed by all.

The presentation and a casual dinner followed at the Callala clubhouse with entertainment provided by a local band. This gave all sailors an opportunity to unwind, discuss the great day of racing and to party!

The Navy was victorious on the day winning 4 of the 6 ‘matches’. JBCYC extends a huge thank you to all Navy personnel and JBCYC members for their support of this event. We all look forward to sharing the Creswell Cup again next year.
