Jervis Bay Sailing Club Inc. proudly announces that Oatley Wines are the major sponsor of the 2008 Jervis Bay Challenge. The Oatley family, owners of Oatley Wines and the world famous maxi yacht Wild Oats XI, have offered the major prize a 3 night accommodation package (air fares not included) to the world famous island resort of Hamilton Island and the Great Barrier Reef. This includes 3 nights accommodation for 2 with breakfast included, airport to Reef Island transfers, a complementary bottle of wine on arrival and full use of island facilities such as kayaks, target shooting, go carting, windsurfing, catamaran sailing, tennis and Hamilton Island Gym. The Jervis Bay Sailing Club is proud to be associated with Oatley Wines who have been strong supporters of sailing for many years.

This is the 5th year of the JB Challenge which combines 2 days of sailing. On Saturday 8th November the challenging passage race gets underway. On Sunday the popular ‘Around the Buoys’ race will complete a full weekend of sailing before competitors head for home. The post race presentation and social on Saturday night will be held at the Huskisson Hotel with ample opportunity for crews to mix and discuss the days racing. The presentation will be concluded with a small ‘competition’ between division winners to decide on who will win the major prize supplied by Oatley Wines.

Early enquiries have been received from around the state with strong interest coming from Sydney, the Illawarra, South Coast, Canberra and Wagga Wagga. In the Trailerable Yachts class the race typically attracts a mixed fleet including Gem’s, Farr 6000’s, Castle 650’s, RL 24’s, Sonata’s, Magnum’s and Clubman’s. In Sports Boats, Elliot’s, Thompson’s & Magic 25’s are most likely to set the pace and all divisions will be hotly contested.

Local keelboat and multihull crews from Jervis Bay Sailing Club and Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Club will need to perform at their best as visiting yachts intend to ‘liven up’ the competition. Wollongong Yacht Club will be strongly represented with 2 Northshore 38’s, a Cavalier 395, a Bavaria 34 and possibly 2 Cavalier 28’s if weather conditions for the trip down the coast permit. Also confirmed to be competing this year will be the Northshore 38 ‘Tartan’ which is sailing down from Sydney.

The fleet of local Seawind 1000 catamaran’s and the Crowther trimaran will be challenged again this year by 2 Wollongong Multihulls, ‘Alize’ and ‘Blondie’. In previous years both of these boats have shown that they mean business and this year will be no different, especially with a chance of winning the major prize!

With winter well and truly behind us and the sailing season in full swing, the club is looking forward to seeing another top field of boats at the start of this year’s – OATLEY WINES JERVIS BAY CHALLENGE Don’t miss out!!!
