Mark Tobin skippering “After Midnight” represented JBCYC in the recent 2016 Sydney to Hobart. Mark and “After Midnight” competed in this race in 2014 and 15 and did very well in trying conditions. High hopes were held for 2016 with the promise of moderate to strong NE winds for most of the race. “After Midnight” is a downwind flyer and is very competitive in these conditions.

Things didn’t get off to the best of starts with the rubber boot sealing the base of the rudder shaft from the sea developing a split just before the start. Fortunately a couple of handy crew-members were able to repair it. “After Midnight” got away to a good start but there was another problem ahead. Just after rounding the mark outside Sydney the spinnaker was launched; as it filled with the breeze it split. This meant a smaller heavier one had to be used which was less than ideal for the wind conditions. “After Midnight” lost some of its competitive edge as a result of this

Despite loosing their spinnaker of choice Mark and the crew managed to improve the boat’s position by about 10 places on the first day. Early on the second day the wind increased in strength, which suited the spinnaker being used. As a result of this they moved up another 10 or so places, getting them into 23rd outright. This placed them first in their division.

Unfortunately the wind didn’t hold and they slipped back a few places on the following day.  They ended up crossing the line in 37th position.  On handicap they finished 4th in (ORC1) Div. 2 and 5th (IRC) Div. 2. – a great effort.
