Dennis Godfrey's light weight trimaran Wahoo and Ron
Kelly's Soling Stuck in First outperformed their larger
rivals to take line honors in their respective divisions
in the second race of the the Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht
Club's Paper Bark Camp Autumn Series held on Sunday
6th April.
Wahoo held off a strong challenge from Mark Tobin's
Cougar to be first over the line while Arabesque (Tony
Byrnes) won a close battle with the Navy's Friendship
(David Bell) for the minor line honors placing in Division
I but it was the Navy's entrant that prevailed on performance
handicap.
The light south easterly conditions proved perfect for
Ron Kelly's Soling to take a clean sweep of all of major
honours in Division II beating Jamie Andrews's Taste
and Try over the line and out performing Brian Saunders
catamaran Sea Change on performance handicap and Pete
Dallaway's Osprey on Regatta Handicap.
With three races remaining in the season, next Saturdays
Around the Bay Race starting and finishing of Huskisson
should prove crucial in deciding the seasons champions
and a large fleet is expected to turn out for the popular
event that will conclude with a prize giving and BBQ
at the Husky Pub.

The annual Creswell Cup was held last weekend.
The two race series saw yachts from the Jervis Bay Cruising
Yacht Club paired against HMAS Creswell in a match racing
event.
Navy's own yachts Friendship and Alexander were supplemented
with yachts from JBCYC to make up the teams.
Despite heavy weather on Saturday a good turnout of
seasoned sailors took on the Jervis Bay course.
The bay at times resembled the mid-atlantic, with some
crews reduced or re-assigned due again to the weather,
and some tough racing followed.
The match racing between the two clubs was close, in
fact the scores were tied, with the Jervis Bay Cruising
Yacht Club eventually taking the win on a countback
to secure the Creswell Cup for 2008.
The usually class-front-runner Tranquility, that often
carries a compliment that would rival Beach Daze, was
reduced to a novice crew of two neighbours, resulting
in unfamiliar back-of-the-pack finishes.
The overnight stay at the excellent Creswell marina
was approved by Captain John Van Dyke, who also sailed
in the race and presented the trophies after welcoming
all visiting sailors to the base in the afternoon sun.
Sea training officer Brad Doyle operated the Navys
inflatable launch to help guide in visiting yachts and
lay racing marks for races.
A much appreciated barbecue dinner was organised by
the commodore of HMAS Creswell Sailing Club, Jim McDonald.
After dinner and refreshing beverages an enthusiastic
contingent of visitors followed Lieutenant Desmond Woods
on an informative historical tour of the base.
Live music provided by local duo Jivehouse was a welcome
addition to this years event.
Following a delicious hot breakfast put on by Creswell,
Sundays ladies race was held in ideal sunny
conditions with boats again coming close to each other
on numerous occasions.
Unfortunately some vessels didnt have a lady on
board, so the crew member who closest resembled a woman
took the helm.
Official race results were:
Division 1
Line Honours: Wahoo (Dennis Godfrey); RHS handicap:
Primal Farr (Peter Tucker); PHS handicap: Primal Farr
(Peter Tucker).
Division 2
Line Honours: Rock Hopper (Ken Drysburgh); RHS handicap:
Rock Hopper (Ken Drysburgh); PHS handicap: Taste and

Ladies Race

3rd: Jennifer Lawrence (SaSea).

Dennis Godfrey's trimaran Wahoo and Brian Saunders's
Seawind 1000 catamaran Sea Change recorded convincing
line honours victories in the final race of the Jervis
Bay Cruising Yacht Club's Vincentia News Agency Summer
Series on the 24th of February. Both yachts overcame
slow starts in light conditions to power through the
large fleet as the winds picked up over the course of
the afternoon and went on to win their respective divisions
of the Series overall.
The seventeen yacht fleet enjoyed the perfect summer
sailing conditions that prevailed as the afternoon progressed
and provided a spectacular scenic backdrop for the large
crowds that had gathered in Huskisson and Vincentia
for the Triathlon Festival.
In Division I while the top performing monohulls Cougar,
Arabesque and Eve's Delight tried in vain to chase down
the flying trimaran as they sailed through the large
contingent of Navy Warships that had gathered for exercises
off HMAS Creswell it was the Beneteau's of Steve Simpson
and Terry Ford that outperformed in the heavier conditions
to take out the major handicap honours.
In Division II Ken Dryburgh's Rock Hopper put in a
strong performance to stay with the Big Cats over the
final stages of the race to finish third over the line
and second in the series overall while the handicap
honours went to Chris Robinson's classic Couta Boat
Couta_Tah and newcomers Isis sailed on the day by Frances
Clements.

Dennis Godfrey's trimaran Wahoo and Alan and Kerry
Leach's Seawind 1000 catamaran Tranquillity continued
their domination the Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Club's
Vincentia News Agency Summer Series with convincing
wins in their respective divisions on the 27th January.
The two race aggregate event held in strengthening 15-30
knot north easterly conditions over a windward-leeward
sprint course saw twenty yachts compete in the first
race and a reduced fleet of thirteen staying the distance
to complete the second race as the conditions deteriorated.
The two yachts took out line honours in divisions I
and II in both races and made a clean sweep of the regatta
and performance handicap prizes in the aggregate results
to put themselves in commanding positions for the series
with two races remaining.
Jeremy Hutchings's Eve's Delight, Mark Tobin's Cougar

JBCYC CRESWELL WINNERs
Navy yachts Alexander and Friendship blitzed their
local match racing opponents in the first of the two
race Creswell Cup Series on Saturday 1st of December.
The event held in conjunction with the opening race
of the Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Club's Vincentia News
Agency Summer Series attracted a large fleet of 23 boats
competing in a revitalised team match racing format
which provided interesting racing across the fleet and
some thrilling finishes.
JBCYC heavyweights Cougar (Mark Tobin) and Arabesque
(Tony Byrnes) led the local charge with victories at
the front end of the fleet but the emphatic wins by
Alexander (Martin Lindsay) and Friendship (Simon Fitzgerald)
got Navy back on an even footing. Alan and Kerry Leach's
Tranquillity kept JBCYC in touch with a comfortable
win over their catamaran rivals Sea Change (Brian Saunders)
after a spate of midfield results had favoured the Navy
Team but a win by Couta Tah (Chris Robinson) and an
unlikely last gasp victory by newcomer Tony Mayer's
Wanhau over veteran campaigner Dennis Meredith's Making
Waves saved the day for the Yacht Club leaving the team
result deadlocked at five wins apiece.
All prizes for the day's event were awarded at a post
race BBQ hosted by HMAS Creswell on the shores of the
marina where the yachts were berthed for the night and
everyone enjoyed the good natured festivities that extended
well into the night.

The final of the Vincentia Logo Express JBCYC Spring
Race series was held on November 18 on a sparkling Jervis
Bay. The conditions could not have been scripted better
for the 19 yachts competing in the decider. Following
four races with no clear winner it was down to this
final race to determine the placings. The pressure began
to show as several yachts crossed the line early on
the first attempt at a start with the fleet being recalled.
With a course traversing the northern part of the Bay,
racing came down to tactics and the nerve to hold your
selected course. It allowed both divisions to race with
each other and individual battles sprang up between
several competitors. None better than the tussle between
Arabesque and Invincible on the long spinnaker run into
Huskisson. Invincible sporting new battle colours on
its spinnaker gradually taking the advantage.
Division one was a line honours contest between Cougar
and the nimble trimaran Wahoo. With Wahoo tacking into
the centre of the bay and Cougar remaining close to
Callala Beach it was exciting to see them both converge
on a marker off Huskisson with mere seconds separating
them. It was a final drag under spinnaker to the finish
line with Cougar crossing ahead of a fast finishing
Wahoo with Invincible next.
Division 2 was to be decided between the two Seawind
catamarans Tranquility and Sea Change and Rockhopper
a Northshore 27. With Sea Change experiencing trouble
when attempting to lower a spinnaker half way through
the race it looked like their chance to take the series
was over. The line honours in division 2 going to Tranquility
ahead of Taste and Try with Rockhopper third.
The final series results are calculated on performance
handicap using the best four results from the five races.
The results show consistency was the key to taking the
series.
Division 1 winner Wahoo, 2nd Jouisannce and 3rd Cougar.
Division 2 winner Sea Change, 2nd Rockhopper and 3rd
Tranquility.
The Vincentia Logo Express Spring series was characterised
by very competitive and close racing. Congratulations
to all competitors and well done to the winners.
The JBCYC now looks forward to the Summer series which
will kick off on December 1 with the Creswell Cup, a
race between the JBCYC and the Navy. The cup is currently
held by Navy with the JBCYC anxious to regain the prize.
The full race results and details of the JBCYC and
its up coming events can be found at www.jbcyc.com.au.
Beautiful Jervis Bay turned on the sunshine and plenty
of breeze for the 20 yachts competing in the 3rd race
of the Logo Express JBCYC Spring Race series held on
Sunday 21 October. This was a record fleet for a JBCYC
race and a marvellous sight as they crossed the start
line in Callala Bay at 11am. The fleet showing a large
variation in yacht designs and sizes from Up Front
a Windrush 23 to the majestic Daedalus a
Mason 54.
With two thirds of the race completed and after rounding
a mark off Huskisson, the nimble division 1 trimaran
Wahoo commenced to sequentially pass the
shorter coursed division 2 yachts. Wahoo
continued in the building breeze to take line honours
for division 1 well ahead of Arabesque in
second place.
With the North East wind gusting to over 30 knots in
the latter part of the race many competitors were finding
the conditions arduous. Yachts began to reef or change
sails to regain control in the building chop during
the return journey past Callala Beach.
The multihulls continue their tight hold of the division
2 title with the Seawind catamarans dominating in a
forceful display over the mono hulls. It was a close
finish with Tranquillity narrowly beating
Sea Change by a margin of only 17 seconds
at the line with Taste & Try a further
16 minutes behind.. This really does appear to be the
year of the cat!. .........So far at least.
Following calculation of the handicapped results an
historic first for the JBCYC was announced. Division
1 yachts Jouisance and Eves
Delight finishing in a tie for first place on
the corrected times measured to the second. As a testament
to the closeness of the racing this series, division
1 saw the first three boats covered by only 12 seconds
after almost 2 hours on the water.
With the series being so tightly contested all eyes
now turn to one of the major sailing events held on
Jervis Bay the JB Challenge on Saturday 3 November.
This will indeed be a spectacular occasion with trailer
sailers and fixed keel boats competing side by side.
Can the mono hulls defeat the cats and start taking
back the crown?
7th October 2007
Mark Tobin's Farr 11.6 Cougar and Ken Dryburgh's Northshore
27 Rock Hopper shared the honours in their respective
divisions after overcoming strong challenges from their
multihull rivals in the second race of the Jervis Bay
Cruising Yacht Club's Vincentia Logo Express Spring
Series held on the 7th of October.
A total of nineteen yachts took part in the four and
a half hour race held in light to moderate SE to NE
winds on a picturesque spring afternoon which saw an
exciting contest unfold as the monohulls and multihulls
continued their fight for early season supremacy. Cougar
just got on top of Dennis Godfrey's flying trimaran
Wahoo in the later stages of the race to take the Division
I Line Honours title and record a Regatta Handicap win
while Rock Hopper held off the growing Seawind catamaran
fleet to take a clean sweep of all the major prizes
on offer in Division II.
Other strong performances on the day were put in by
the consistent Arabesque skippered by Tony Byrnes and
Frank Taylor's Invincible in Division I while Chris
Robinson's Couta-Tah, Alan and Kerrie Leach's Tranquillity
and Bran Saunders's Sea Change were the best of the
rest in Division II.
Prizes for the day were awarded at the Callala Junior
Sailing Club where the crews unwound around the barbecue
while the race committee crunched the numbers and it
was a happy Huskisson contingent that returned to Currambene
Creek to continue their celebrations. Thanks to all
those who took part and contributed to success of the
day.

2007-08 season off to a spectacular start.
The race sailed in two divisions to accommodated the
large fleet of eighteen boats which included visiting
entries from the Jervis Bay Sailing Club and HMAS Creswell
was dominated by the mutihulls who found the course
and conditions much their liking on the day with Wahoo
flashing past Mark Tobin's Cougar on the final reach
to the line in Division I and Tranquillity taking a
clean sweep of all major honours in Division II.
The Navy's S111 Alexander skippered by Jamie McAlindon
was awarded the race on Performance Handicap in Division

SAILING SEASON TO START WITH SPRING
SERIES
A large fleet of around 20 yachts is expected to compete
in the first race of the Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Club's
Vincentia Logo Express Spring Series this weekend as
the 2007- 2008 season gets underway in earnest. Building
on last season's success and the increasing number of
boats competing, the race format will be expanded to
accommodate two divisions this year. Division 1 will
see last season's champions Arabesque, Cougar and Motion
battling it out with the Navy's Friendship and entries
from the Jervis Bay Sailing Club for early honours while
in Division II the smaller yachts will take on the growing
fleet of catamarans and the two timber classics Osprey
and Couta-Tah over a shorter course which is sure to
make for some exciting finishes as both fleets converge
over the race's latter stages.
The race will take place on Sunday 23rd September with
registration and race briefing being held at the Callala
Junior Sailing Club at 09:30 am. The race will start
at approximately 11:00am and there will be a BBQ and
presentation back at the clubhouse on completion of
the race. Existing members and visitors wishing to participate
are encouraged to download and complete the race entry
or membership forms from the Club's Website www.jbcyc.com.au
in advance and come prepared to renew their Club and
YNSW subscriptions on the day. A limited number of Official
Racing Rules Books will be available for purchase and
a large range of Club Merchandise will also be on display
for ordering.
Nine yachts took part in the friendly Season Opening
event held on the 9th Sept which proved an invaluable
opportunity for those competing to ready their crew
and equipment for the upcoming series. Bran Hume's Bounty
35 Motion continued last season's good form to take
the Division I Regatta and Performance Handicap Prizes
and Mark Tobin's Cougar capitalised on Arabesque's "stage
fright" course error to claim Div I Line Honours.
In Division II Alan and Kerry Leach's Tranquillity
beat fellow "Cat" and Performance Handicap
winner Sea Change home for Line Honours while sponsor
Ken Dryburgh's Northshore 27 Rock Hopper laid a claim
for a place in Division I with an impressive Regatta
Handicap win. Other notable performances on the day
included that of newcomer Ron Kelly in his Soling Stuck
in First who overcame a late start to get back amongst
the fleet in Division I and Tony Mayer's determination
to complete the race in Wanhau after sailing the longer
course.
Special thanks to Callala Junior Sailing Club for their
hospitality and to all those members who have worked
hard behind the scenes and on the day to make the first
outing such a success.
Sunday 20th May 2007
Peter Dallaway
Tony Byrnes's Farr 1020 Arabesque snatched a last gasp
victory in the final race of the Jervis Bay Cruising
Yacht Club's Vincentia News Agency Autumn Series on
the weekend to take the series and wrestle the Club
Championship from the grip of leading contenders Motion
and Eve's Delight in a stunning result that came down
to a mere 20 seconds over the course of the entire season.
In an action packed afternoon of close quarters racing
in gusty westerly conditions Mark Tobin's Cougar just
got up to beat Arabesque on the line after a long chase
through a record 20 yacht fleet around a tight 10 nautical
mile Callala Bay course to claim line honours with visiting
trimaran Wahoo sailed by Denis Godfrey finishing a creditable
third.
Other hopefuls for the Autumn series, Denis Meredith's
Making Waves, Jamie Andrews's Taste and Try and Steve
Simpson's Eastern Star were pushed out of handicap contention
on the day by the solid performances of the timber classics
Couta Tah and Osprey who finished second and fifth respectively.
Alan and Kerry Leach's Tranquillity was the best of
the 'Cats' in ninth place and Bob Turnbull made a welcome
return on Saka adding some colour to the rear end of
the fleet along with the 'bottle shop boys' on Wanhau.
Prizes for the day's racing and the series were awarded
at the Junior Sailing Club's premises where a large
crowd gathered for the final BBQ of the season and everyone
was congratulated for their participation and sportsmanship,
the skippers thanked on behalf of their crews and the
party continued well into the night.

NEWSLETTER NO. 60 April 2007
1 May 2007
Peter Cowman, Club Secretary
Another season coming to a close with beautiful autumn
weather. There have been several highlights for the
year but probably the most noteworthy was our return
to Creswell on two occasions.
The main purpose of this newsletter is to advise members
and friends of end of season activities.
1. Financial Year
Our financial year ends on 31st May so please send any
cheques/invoices to the Treasurer, Dave Churchward well
before that date.
2. Election of Office Bearers
The election for next season will be held at the Callala
Junior Sailing School after the barbeque on 20th May.
Please consider nominating for a position as it is essential
all positions are filled.
3. Annual General Meeting
This will be held during June following a monthly committee
meeting. At the AGM the election of office bearers (from
20th May) will be ratified.
Last year the Office of Fair Trading advised that the
AGM could not be held prior to 31st May and we had to

5. Final Newsletter
This will be my last newsletter for the Club. I have
now produced 60 newsletters over an 8 year period and
would like someone else to take over the role. I hope
you have enjoyed reading the newsletters and that they
have kept you up to date with matters that are relevant
to the Club.
We are fortunate to enjoy sailing and social activities
in such a beautiful part of Australia. However it is
also important that we have a strong club with good
administration so that we have a voice in the management
of Jervis Bay.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP REACHING CLIMAX
With one race in the Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Clubs
Vincentia News Agency Autumn Series remaining and the
prestigious Club Championship hanging in the balance
a record fleet of around 20 yachts are expected to compete
in the seasons final race this Sunday.
Brian Humes Bounty 35 Motion after yet another
strong performance in her last outing will have to stave
off challenges from the likes of Jeremy Hutchings Eves
Delight with the experienced Kanga Birtles aboard, Steve
Simpsons Eastern Star and Tony Byrness Arabesque
to secure the seasons top honours while Denis
Merediths Making Waves will attempt to hang on
to a narrow points lead over 10 other contenders including
the rapidly improving newcomer Jamie Andrews Taste
& Try to clinch the Autumn Series.
In the clubs last race on 6th May, Motion continued
her consistent good form by taking out the Regatta and
Performance Handicap divisions of the shortened 13 nautical
mile race held in testing light southerly winds after
finishing third across the line behind Mark Tobins
Cougar and Tony Byrnes Arabesque. Cougar pounced on
the final leg to beat Arabesque on the line by the slimmest
of margins in one of the seasons most enthralling
races which saw several boats take the lead at different
stages of the race.
In the middle of the fleet the catamarans Sea Change
and Tranquillity struggled to make an impression in
the light going and Making Waves was the pick of the
backmarkers sailing over the top of arch rival Osprey
in the final stages of the race to win a rare bragging
rights victory and keep her series hopes alive.
As usual an enthusiastic crowd attended the post race
prize giving and BBQ held at the Callala Junior Sailing
Club and Huskisson was treated to the sight of a procession
of boats entering the creek under lights at the end
of a long days racing.

Competition is heating up in the Jervis Bay Cruising
Yacht Clubs Vincentia News Agency Autumn Series
with a near record fleet of 18 yachts contesting the
third race of the series on the 22nd of April. With
only 2 races in the regular season remaining and the
club championship also up for grabs all stops are being
pulled out as crews battle for the seasons final
honours.
Light variable southerly winds greeted the fleet at
the start of its last outing for the 14 nautical mile
pentastar race favouring the lightweight flyers in the
early going but freshening conditions in the later stages
of the race helped to bring the back markers into contention
by the end of the three and a half hour race.
Line honours on the day was emphatically won by the
Jervis Bay Sailing Clubs visiting trimaran Wahoo
skippered by Denis Godfrey who revelled in the light
conditions to beat the larger displacement monohulls
Cougar and Arabesque home by a comfortable margin with
Eves Delight, Friendship and Motion all putting
in strong performances at the front end of the fleet.
Silver Heels and Eastern Star kept their championship
hopes alive with solid handicap performances but it
was the diminutive Endeavour 24 Teco skippered by Hubert
Notter who emerged from the back of the pack to record
a popular victory on corrected time.
Denis Merideths Making Waves finished a creditable
fourth on handicap to take the overall lead in the series,
sponsor Dave Bennett returning from a spell had his
Jarkan Sapphire Dancer going well to finish third on
performance handicap, Brian Saunderss Sea Change
won the Cat Fight from Alan and Kerrie Leachs
Tranquillity and Ken Dryburghs Rock Hopper finished
second only to Brain Humes Motion on Regatta Handicap.
As usual the day finished with an enthusiastic gathering
at the Callala Junior Sailing Club and a welcome BBQ
after a long days sailing. Full race results delayed
on the day due to technical difficulties are now available
here.

The Easter Cruise 2007 began in testing weather conditions.
This led to the canceling of the offshore leg of the
cruise. Yachts headed straight for the protected waters
of Hole in the Wall. Again the lack of boating facilities
in Jervis Bay was shown, with no public moorings being
available for our boats as well as others. However,
an enjoyable night was had by all, with yachts moored
up together on anchor.
Friday evening a dinner party was held on Arabesque,
with a team effort of chefs, from all boats, producing
some excellent curries. A poker tournament was then
held on Tranquility, with some funds being raised for
the club.
The Saturday night fireworks were spectacular, with
twilight drinks held in the Commodores Jungle Bar. A
BBQ was then provided for all present.
As the weekend went on, the weather improved, with
beautiful sailing conditions being experienced by all
yachts who participated in the cruise. Some even extended
into Tuesday.

ARABESQUE, TASTE & TRY SHARE YACHTING HONOURS
Tony Byrness Farr 1020 Arabesque and Jamie Andrews
J24 Taste & Try skippered by Chris Capel for the
Dryburgh Syndicate took out Division I and II respectively
of the Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Clubs Husky Pub
Around the Bay Series on the Weekend. The final leg
of the 5 race series held in conjunction with the Vincentia
News Agency Autumn Series attracted a fleet of 12 yachts
and the 15-20 knot northerly breeze ensured a fast passage
around the 15 nautical mile course and a timely finish
off Huskisson before the strong southerly hit later
in the afternoon.
Visiting multi-hull Lobo skippered by Steve Meacham
accepted the challenge of taking on the Yacht Clubs
top marker Cougar to win Line Honours in controversial
circumstances after a hard fought duel at the front
of the fleet was marred by an ambiguity in the sailing
instructions which saw the two yachts sail slightly
different courses. The race committee upheld Lobos
line honours victory
with Cougar taking the race on Performance and Regatta
Handicap after a successful appeal for redress.
The Navys Friendship skippered by Jamie McAlindon
from HMAS Creswell put in another strong performance
to finish third across the line ahead of Arabesque in
Division I while Chris Capel and Jamie Andrews combined
well to bring Taste & Try home ahead of the fast
finishing catamarans Tranquillity and Sea Change in
Division II. Other stand out performers on the day were
Ken Dryburghs new boat Rock Hopper which won the
Regatta Handicap Prize in division II and newcomer Tony
Mayers effort aboard Whanau in beating Osprey
and Making Waves across the line in his first outing
with the Club.
The post race formalities were held over a delicious
BBQ at the Husky Pub with the usual conviviality spilling
over well into the night. Special thanks to our race
sponsors, start boat and race officials for doing a
great job under difficult circumstances and to all competitors
for their enthusiastic participation.

NAVYS FRIENDSHIP WINS CRESWELL CUP
HMAS Creswells Swarbrick S111 Friendship skippered
by Lt Jamie McAlindon won the opening race of the Jervis
Bay Cruising Yacht Clubs Vincentia News Agency
Autumn Series on the weekend. The race held in conjunction
with the second leg of the Creswell Cup hosted by the
Navys training establishment attracted a fleet
of 14 Yachts including 2 Navy entrants. Friendship revelled
in the 20-knot southerly breeze on an afternoon of spectacular
racing with warships and helicopters exercising in and
around the course, to finish second over the line and
take the race on performance handicap to secure the
Creswell Cup for the home team.
Mark Tobins Cougar and Brian Humes Motion
continued their domination of the line honours and regatta
handicap divisions of the race with respective wins
and
Newcomer Jamie Andrews and novice crew of fellow teachers
out sailed many of their more experienced rivals to
finish mid fleet in their first outing aboard their
new acquisition Taste & Try. Other notable performances
on the day were Irena Hutchings spectacular start at
the helm of Eves Delight which saw the Adams
10 in a commanding position at the first windward mark
and the cruel twist of fate, a hydraulic, not neurologic,
failure aboard Denis Merediths Making Waves which
caused her steering to go awry and rob her of second
place in the Cup.
The post race formalities were held in the marina at
HMAS Creswell where CO Captain Mark Sander welcomed
the crews and their families, Pete Dallaway and Tony
Byrnes thanked the Navy for their hospitality, acknowledged
the race sponsors and officials and awarded the prizes
with the assistance of the clubs Golden
Girls Meryl and Wendy and Past Commodore Pete
Cowman delivered an enthralling account of the clubs
long association with the Navy.
The Clubs next race is on Saturday 24th March starting
off Huskisson with a BBQ to follow at the Husky Pub.

March 2007 Creswell Race - What an
Event!
By Jamie McAlindon
The overnight sailing event for the 'Edmund Thomas
Cooper Memorial Trophy' went off very well. We managed
to get FRIENDSHIP and ALEXANDER into the race, a fact
that gained lots a good comment from around the fleet.
13 boats from JBCYC and a number of support vehicles
made the most of their privileges in spending a night
aboard HMAS CRESWELL.
In summary, the main race was held on Sat with a 1200
start of Husky following a round the bay course to finish
off the break wall at CRESWELL. Presentations were held
in the late afternoon with Navy prizes contributing
followed by a well catered BBQ and the subsequent evening
social activity. Sunrise saw a few early swimmers at
Captains Beach. A forward hands race commenced at 1050
off the break wall running out to the submarine buoy
and back.
Crews were allocated for FRIENDSHIP and ALEXANDER with
an emphasis on recent involvement with sailing at CRESWELL.
On the way up to Husky Blue had ALEX well and truly
overhauling us on FRIENDSHIP despite us running a number
1 genoa to his 2. This saw us diving into the sail locker
in an attempt to rectify the situation. It was to no
avail for several reasons and we resigned ourselves
to watching ALEXANDER from astern as they challenge
COUGAR at the head of the fleet. The wind eased off
Husky as the start approached which gave us back some
advantage at that point.
The fleet left Husky to round the mussel barges at
Vincentia and getting a close look at the 104' mega
yacht moored off Collingwood beach. The palatial drop
down transom stairs are no doubt worth more than most
of the boats racing past, the tender definitely was.
The fleet then proceeded across to Dart Point on the
other side of the bay before heading south to the submarine
buoy where a fisherman was tied up and very surprised
to have close encounter with so many yachts. At this
point we had swapped second and third position with
ARABESQUE several times but were behind by several boat
lengths at this late stage in the race.
In our all or nothing attempt to overhaul ARABESQUE,
we were the only boat in the fleet to pop the spinnaker
in what were stiff conditions. After a minor snag in
setting the spinnaker due to low crew experience it
flew without a problem to put us well ahead and provide
a great show in front of the numerous Navy ships in
the bay at the time. Many of the NEOC have commented
on seeing FRIENDSHIP under spinnaker. From that point
we never looked back and finished second across the
line but close enough to COUGAR to win the Cup on club
handicap.
Whilst ALEXANDER trailed FRIENDSHIP from the start
this was what was originally expected as she need a
scrub below the water line. Regardless as the conditions
picked up she made good account of herself to close
from the trailing group up to the leading group of boats.
I will have to get Blue to paint a more colourful picture
of ALEXANDER's race.
Hopefully this is the start of some seriously close
match racing in the near future, Wed afternoon and twilight
sailing anybody?
All yachts berthed safely before the presentations
were held on the grassed area adjacent to the floating
pontoon wharf. There were prizes donated by CRESWELL
and the crews were very receptive of the Caps and Coolers
they received. I will not regale you with the complete
results list. Suffice to say it culminated in the 'Edmund
Thomas Cooper Memorial Trophy' being awarded back to
FRIENDSHIP and crew by a pair of glam girls. At least
the Skipper got glam girls as shown in the photo, which
is honestly only there to indicate the size of the trophy
and our flash CRESWELL team shirts!
The race format was announced as maturing into a challenge
series for a final match race similar to the 'America's
Cup' so it should be interesting to see what interest
it creates in the future.
Following the formalities there was an all in BBQ which
merged into the nights story telling over a fine beverage
or two. Now I dont drink so I cont speak for others
but you gotta love that Darjeeling tea on EVES DELIGHT!
Morning saw some surprisingly early risers for a dip
at Captains Beach before it was back to the BBQ for
Bacon and Egg rolls.
After scrubbing a few decks, checking gear and going
to the bottom of the harbour to recover items lost overboard
the day was set for the forward hands race. The start
was off the break wall at 1050 with the 'normal' skipper
not able to handle the helm. I must make a note that
the sails are much easier to see from further forward,
so that I listen to the crew more in future. FRIENDSHIP
had trouble with a jammed main sail that would not raise
without the winch and almost missed the start except
for a bit of iron sail intervention. Apologies to the
CO and Blue but remember I was not at the helm and there
were no points
COUGAR lead from the front again until ARABESQUE managed
to lunge past before rounding the wrong mark. Once again
as there were no points we decided to help out and let
them know of the navigational error. This appeared obviously
the result of unfamiliar territory at this end of the
bay. Despite the navigational indiscretion ARABESQUE
managed to overhaul FRIENDSHIP to finish in second across
the line. I can feel a change of skippers coming on
here.
